Chapter Twenty-Four

Before I started the hunting job Alex had given me, I headed to the River to shower and change. I called Tad on my way, then phoned in an order for half a dozen thick burgers so they’d be ready by the time I finished cleaning up. I was ravenous. I showered, then grabbed the waiting bag of delicious-smelling food to take to my car. I didn’t see Brie or Colin, and I didn’t go looking for them.

I sat in the back lot in the semi-dark, eating my burgers and thinking about Mateo Raith and what had just happened. When I’d showered, I’d traced the bruises and marks on my wet body, shuddering with fresh lust, excitement, and the wrongness of the whole thing.

I was having a relationship with the vampire master. I wasn’t sure yet what that might mean, but…

It wasn’t just physical. No matter how much I might want to believe otherwise, it wasn’t just sex, although that would have been magnificent all on its own. The sex had been full of magic, and I craved magic.

But I’d told him I loved him.

The infection might have made Mateo obsessed with me, but I understood the infection was gone. And his love for me had only grown stronger.

“Fuck,” I whispered. My life had just become a little more complicated.

Mateo’s face became Gray’s in my mind, and the anxiety tightening my stomach eased. Gray would love me no matter what, though he might be inclined to fight Mateo because of it. Whoever thought you could only love one person was fooling themselves.

Tad arrived just as I was finishing up my fourth burger, and I saved the final two for him. Tad was always hungry.

He hit the parking block and then rushed from the car, Poppy clinging to his hair, waving and calling my name as he came. “We’re here,” he shouted. “Bat, we’re here!”

As if I might somehow not know that.

“Where are we going?” he asked, after he’d gotten into my car. He grabbed a burger from the bag, tore off a tiny chunk for Poppy, and then took a gigantic bite, talking the entire time.

I shook my head and pulled out of the lot, listening to Tad and Poppy chattering nonstop, my heart lightening. They were giant pains in the ass, but they were good for me.

Alex called when I was halfway to Creske.

“I had a sudden bout of anxiety,” he said. “It took me a while to understand what it was, or I’d have called earlier. Are you tracking the bloodsucker?”

“I’m not there yet,” I said, tuning out Tad and Poppy’s voices. “What are you nervous about?”

“I suppose I must be worried about you, baby,” he said, and though he’d injected a note of lightness into his voice, I heard the seriousness beneath it. “Did you take backup?”

“Yes. Tad and Poppy.”

“Wonderful,” he said, dripping with sarcasm. “I’m sure the idiot Divine and the dainty fairy will keep you safe. I’ve informed the local police you’ll be stopping by to have a chat.
